PhD Fellowship in advanced sensor techniques for concrete recycling (NETHERLANDS)

Job description

The European project C2CA focuses on the full recycling of concrete demolition waste into new concrete. To that end, the waste must be separated efficiently and economically into streams of clean granulates and fines suitable for production of high quality cement clinker. The waste constitutes a major challenge for high quality reuse, since it consists of a mixture of granulates, cement stone and building waste pollutants. The candidate’s research will be aimed at on-line sensor techniques for reliable materials identification and accurate characterisation of the physical properties of the material streams. This research should provide the knowledge and basic technology to allow for continuous and fast sensor measurements, which are required for on-site materials quality assessment and evaluation of performance of large-scale concrete recycling processes. The successful candidate will work in close cooperation with another PhD candidate whose research will be aimed at the recycling processes.

Requirements

The eligible candidate has a solid background in physics, preferably with some experience in laser physics or nuclear spectrographic techniques. An affinity for experimental research is highly desirable. The candidate has excellent communication skills and can report in clearly written and spoken English.
