PhD fellowship or Post-doc position on dynamic response of azimuthing thruster propellers IVT

NTNU, Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK), and Rolls-Royce Marine have together established a University Technology Centre (UTC) at the Marine Technology Centre in Trondheim, Norway. An important research topic in this co-operation is dynamic loads on azimuthing thrusters operating in off-design and harsh weather condition.

The current position is related to a co-operation between Rolls-Royce, NTNU, Technical University of Dresden, and Klingelnberg GMBH investigating the dynamic forces on the drive train in azimuthing thrusters, including the hydroelastic coupling between the thruster response and the hydrodynamic forces on the propeller. For the current position, modeling of the hydrodynamic loads using analytical and numerical models, for integration in such a hydroelastic analysis will be a core part of the work. The candidate will get access to full scale measurement, and will get to co-operate with MARINTEK in carrying out model tests with hydroelastic response of azimuthing thrusters.

Qualifications: M.Sc. degree in marine technology, fluid dynamics,
aerodynamics, or another relevant field. The candidate must be qualified for admittance as a PhD student at NTNU and have good English language skills.

For the post doc position, a PhD in a relevant discipline is required.
For further information please contact Professor Sverre Steen (sverre.steen@ntnu.no).
All applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English (in speaking and writing).
Good skills in Norwegian are also preferred. Applicants must indicate their level skills in English and Norwegian.

All applications shall include certified copies of academic transcript and CV, and be submitted electronically through www.jobbnorge.no using the reference no. IVT-10/11 as ID to access the database. The attachments to the applications shall be gathered in one single file. Application deadline: 28 February 2011.
