PhD position in the Geology Group at Stockholm University

Project
This is a fully funded four year PhD position under the joint supervision of Prof. V. Pease and Dr. E. Arnold at Stockholm University, and Dr. R. Scott and Dr. A. Morton, CASP, Cambridge University. The successful applicant will be based in Stockholm. The project is focused on provenance studies of sediments from locations around the circum-Arctic in order to test different tectonic scenarios. Heavy mineral suite analysis combined with zircon U-Pb and O-isotopic analyses via SIMS and LA-ICP will be used to identify source regions within a temporal and spatial framework. This work is vital to establishing a comprehensive stratigraphic framework which can be compared to, for example, the North American datum of Alaska and Canada in order to test various tectonics scenarios.
The successful applicant will join a dynamic group working on the tectonic evolution of the circum-Arctic, will collect original material during the planned 2012 expedition, have access to existing collections, and will contribute to CASP industry-funded projects. Fieldwork occurs under rugged conditions and in remote areas – outdoor experience is meritorious. In addition to fieldwork, a significant amount of technical training will be obtained in the UK, so an ability and willingness to travel is essential.
