PhD Scholarship in Satellite Gravity Data & Earth Structure (NETHERLANDS)

Job description

This PhD project focuses on the application of satellite gravity data to northwestern Europe. The tectonic history of this area is still under debate, and interpretations of existing measurements disagree. The GOCE satellite delivers high-resolution gravity measurements to study the structure of the Earth in greater detail. In this project, full use has to be made of these measurements by combining them with other observations of gravity, deformation, and sea-level, as well as with numerical models of geophysical processes in the area. The aim is to make an improved mechanical model of the top Earth layers beneath northwestern Europe.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to have a university degree (MSc) in physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, earth and planetary sciences, geodesy, or a closely related area, with a strong background in numerical modelling. Applicants must also be proficient in spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be granted a temporary employment contract with the university that will last for a period of 4 years (48 months). There will be an evaluation at the end of the first year. Within the period of this contract, the candidate is expected to produce a dissertation (PhD thesis) of sufficient quality for him/her to be awarded a PhD.
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA').
