Postdoctoral Fellow, Sustainable Building Materials

Job description:
The scientific research concerns the modelling, design and development of sustainable and durable building materials. In the group materials are developed that are based on secondary raw materials and with additional functionalities, meeting requirements in regard to constructive, chemical, physical and aesthetic properties. Examples of deployed ingredients are fly ashes, silicas, slags, agricultural and industrial wastes, and recycled aggregates, from varying and non-traditional sources. Functionality is introduced by incorporating photocatalytic powder, phase changing materials etc. So far attention was mainly focused on concrete, but the group is rapidly expanding its interest to other materials as well.

The research group possesses excellent computational facilities, advanced granular packing models, microstucture models, and well-equipped building material laboratories for physical/chemical/mechanical testing. In the group six PhD candidates and a postdoc work on: eco-concrete, immobilization using cementitious binders, chloride penetration of concrete, moisture transport in building materials, development of nano-silica, development of gypsum plasterboards, and application of nanoparticles in concrete, and two more PhD position are vacant. Scientific institutions and the industrial sector have shown great interest in these projects, which are all externally sponsored. The research group maintains close contacts with the building materials chain and with public authorities, and regularly convenes with their representatives that form a sponsor/user group. Furthermore, there is frequent and intensive contact with other researchers, both domestic and abroad (mostly Europe, China and Japan).
Requirements:
A PhD degree (in architecture, building technology, mechanical/civil/chemical engineering, earth sciences, physics, chemistry, or similar discipline) and having industrial experience/interest in the above mentioned topics, and related theoretical and experimental work. The ideal candidate will show an ability to supervise PhD candidates, to apply for and supervise external projects, and to develop and maintain good working relationships with external contacts and have excellent communication skills, particularly in written and spoken English.
Conditions of employment:
Intended starting date: May, 2011. The duration of the project is 3 years. We offer at least € 2.861 gross per month in the first year, on a full-time basis and related to relevant experience and knowledge, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end of the year allowance. Besides this, the TU/e has an excellent package of attractive benefits for employees, a child-care facility, and a modern sports complex. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.
