Associate Senior Lecturer in Ecophysiology and Biogeochemistry

The Department conducts internationally recognised research and teaching with both basic and applied aspects. The research includes multiple topics: Ecophysiology & Biogeo-chemistry, Plant Cell- & Molecular Biology, Ecology & Conservation, Ecotoxicology, Systematics & Biodiversity. Research related to climate change and air pollution are important areas in ecology, ecophysiology and biogeochemistry with around 20 active researchers, technicians and PhD students. The department is located on the campus of the Gothenburg Botanical Garden (one of the largest and most excellent in northern Europe) and within walking distance to many other Departments at the University of Gothenburg. Responsibilities
Within the position you should independently develop research within the subject area of the position. The work is focused on nitrogen and the processes that regulate the emissions of N2O, primarily using stable isotopes associated with tracing modelling. The responsibilities have a focus on improving links between the biogeochemical processes in soils and emissions of greenhouse gases with the goal of improving the prediction capacity of ecosystem models.

We welcome cross-border work, between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, to improve the integration of the biogeochemical research between institutions at the University of Gothenburg. Participation in international research collaborations around the use of stable isotopes in terrestrial ecosystems are part of the responsibilities.

Process studies as well as modelling work will be done in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences (University of Gothenburg), University of Lund and KTH within the national strategic research programmes BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystems in a Changing Climate), Merge (Modelling the Regional and Global Earth system) and LAGGE (Landscape Greenhouse Gas Exchange – Integration of Terrestrial and Freshwater Sources and Sinks). Modelling work will also be part of the multidisciplinary research platform Tellus (www.science.gu.se). The successful candidate should be integrated into these programs.

The duties include attracting research grants from external funding agencies as well as teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualification requirements
The qualification requirements as stated in the Higher Educational Ordinance, according to transitional rules, are applied for the position. Preference should be given to candidates awarded their degree no more than five years before the final date for applications for the position. Candidates awarded their degree earlier than this should also be given preference if special grounds exist. Such grounds may comprise leave of absence because of illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances. An additional requirement is ability to teach in Swedish or English.

Assessment
Scientific proficiency will be the most important criterion in assessing the applicant's qualifications. When assessing the scientific proficiency special weight is given to documented skills within the subject area of the position. Scientific proficiency is primarily shown by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Priority will be given to documented experience of process studies using stabile isotopes within the C and N cycles, with focus on N-processes linked to tracing modeling. Previous work on biogeochemical process linked to emission of N2O is a merit, as well as field work measuring emissions and the use of mechanistic models.

Experience from international cooperation and participation in research networks are highly meriting.

Pedagogical proficiency shall, after scientific proficiency, be regarded as the second most important assessment criterion. When assessing the pedagogical proficiency special weight should be given to the ability to implement, lead and plan education.

Administrative experience, ability to develop and manage the operations and personnel as well as ability to interact with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development will then be considered.

University of Gothenburg strives for a more equal gender distribution among its faculty, and women are especially invited to apply for this position. Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) are considered in the appraisal of merits and are specified in connection with the account of merits and experience.

The position is valid for four years. An associate senior lecturer, may on application, be promoted to a senior lectureship for an indefinite period according to transitional rules, if he or she has obtained qualifications as docent within the first four years of the employment.
