Full Professor Position in Applied Mechanics and Design

Tasks/job description:

The Professor we are looking for in Applied Mechanics and Design leads the Chair of Applied Mechanics and Design, part of the Structural Design unit. This chair will carry out research related to the application of Applied Mechanics to buildings (finite element method, dynamics, statics), also to support the many MSc-projects within the unit. Regarding research on Thin-Walled Structures (web crippling, plate behaviour) the chair has a sound international reputation and it foresees still many issues to be solved within the domain. To further strengthen the research on structural systems itself, the research should focus additionally on Applied Mechanics and Design, i.e. the direct influence of mechanics on the building design (optimization, form finding, generative

design).

Cooperation, innovation and a comprehensive approach are key words in the research program of the Structural Design unit within which the different research groups collaborate closely on achieving innovative research. They are therefore inseparable from each other. Strong cooperation with the chair Innovative Structural Design will lead to research on system design & development, involving light-weight structures and new building structure concepts. Apart from scope for fresh ideas along with a motivated and inspiring team of colleagues, we can offer you a high quality laboratory. Research financed by second- and third-source funds is becoming more important for the university. In that respect you will set-up research programs and play a role in the management of research activities. With your network you acquire research projects and supply the building industry and engineering consultancy firms with new solutions to challenges of tomorrow. 

Besides research, the Chair will contribute to the department’s education program that educates future structural engineers for their role in this respect and trains its research staff to be up to date on current developments. The Chairs will contribute to the department’s Bachelor program on Architecture, Building, and Planning in the field of structural design. In the department’s Master track on Structural Design, the Chair will set up and contribute to courses on Applied Mechanics.

Requirements:

The candidate:

• Holds preferably a PhD on a relevant topic and has an excellent track record of scientific publications in ISI journals concerning the field of structural design and related areas of research (applied mechanics, concrete structures, design theory);
• is a certified teacher with experience in teaching and guiding undergraduate, graduate and PhD students;
• has proven managerial abilities and excellent communication skills;
• maintains good collaboration with different research groups and industrial partners;
• has international experience;
• has experience in defining research themes and in gaining the required external funding.

Procedure of appointment:

As part of the application process, the candidate will be asked to make a presentation for members of the appointment advisory committee. The committee shall assess candidates regarding their fit on the profile of the Chair and a report of recommendation is submitted to the Board of the department.
