PhD Scholarship in Interferometry for GPR Monitoring (NETHERLANDS)

Job description

This project’s objective is to develop and implement practical strategies for electromagnetic interferometry, in the frequency band from 10 MHz to 3 GHz, which can be used to monitor shallow subsurface flow processes. When applied to electromagnetic noise data, the method has the purpose of turning noise into a useful signal, based on which these subsurface processes can be characterised. This will allow applications in areas where controlled sources are not easily deployed. When applied to controlled or transient source signals, the aim is to replace the sources by virtual sources that coincide with the receivers of the experiment. Creating virtual sources at receiver locations is necessary when it is difficult to physically place sources and receivers at the physical receiver locations, such as in boreholes. Cross-correlation and deconvolution techniques have been developed theoretically. The
deconvolution technology has the additional advantage of reducing the complexity of the data inversion problem. Developing practical strategies and application of these technologies is scientifically novel. Theoretial developments and field experiments will be carried out in this project.
