The PhD fellowship is open to applicants in all areas of research covered by the Department. The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, to help recruit the most talented candidates.
The PhD research fellow will be appointed for a period of 3 years, but can be prolonged after agreed upon by the Department with one year to execute teaching duties.
The position is organized at the Department of Physics. Currently, there are 26 professors, 10 associate professors, 6 adjunct professors, 70 PhD research fellows and 25 postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Physics.
The current research fields at the Department includes optics, energy and environmental physics, didactic physics, biophysics and medical technology, condensed matter physics, surface science, nanotechnology and theoretical physics. Further information is available at:
We seek highly motivated candidates with a Master of Science in physics or other relevant area required before starting in the position. Promising candidates who deliver their master thesis within 1st of July are encouraged to apply.
In order to be accepted as a PhD candidate the grades of the MSc study have to be sufficiently high (in Norway: B/2.5 or better) and C or better of the BSc. Moreover, we request that the candidates contact a relevant research group at the Department to define a project. A brief outline of the project, signed by both the applicant and his/her prospective supervisor should be included with the application.
The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties.
