PhD position in Evolutionary Marine Ecology (Sweden)

At the Department of Biology a 4-year research fellow (PhD position) is available within the field of evolutionary marine ecology. The PhD candidate will be part of the Modelling Group (http://bio.uib.no/modelling), a young and dynamic research group which builds mechanistic models to increase our understanding of marine ecology, life history evolution, evolution of mating systems, and behavioural ecology. The research is internationally oriented with an extensive scientific network both nationally and internationally, and the atmosphere is highly collaborative.

Description

The PhD position is part of the newly established Nordic Centre of Excellence for Research on Marine Ecosystems and Resources under Climate Change. The Centre constitutes a unique, cross-disciplinary framework for evaluating effects of climate change on Nordic marine ecosystems with a particular focus on Atlantic cod, and the Modelling Group at the Department of Biology is one of nine participating nodes. Education of PhD students is a main focus of the centre and joint meetings and research visits to other nodes will be an important part of the activity. For more information about the Centre and its participants, please visit http://www.cees.uio.no/NCoE

The successful applicant will model temperature effects on life history adaptations and population dynamics in Atlantic cod. Increasing sea temperatures are already being measured, and physiologists are elucidating how the performance of individual fish might be affected. In this project we will use the existing literature on these topics to build a theoretical model that scales individual responses to population-level consequences. By explicitly accounting for temperature as a driving factor, the model will be used as a virtual laboratory to study how cod populations may respond to climate change. The model will also be used to study responses when fishing is acting simultaneously. Cod is a species where many of the underlying physiological relationships are well known, so this integrative study has great value because general insight can be transferable also to other species and systems. The expected output is also relevant for extending marine ecological theory and for fisheries managers, because they now need to account for both fishing and climate change.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with background in one or more of the following disciplines: adaptation, ecology, evolution, fisheries science, life history theory, physiology, and theoretical biology. Candidates with backgrounds from related disciplines will also be considered. Good communication and writing skills in English and a desire to engage in collaborative research are essential.

Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.

In total, the fellowship period is 4 years. For positions with a 4-year duration 25 pct of the period will be designated to teaching and/or administrative duties. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow or similar.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian and English.
