Ph.D. position on nano-engineering of semiconductor Quantum Dots ( France)

A quantum dot is a compound-semiconductor whose excitons are confined in all three spatial dimensions, leading to a sharper density of states than conventional structures. As a result, they have superior transport and optical properties. Several types of optoelectronic devices have been realized with quantum dots and remarkable properties have been demonstrated, in particular at III-Vlab, such as highly efficient mode-locking exceeding the state-of-the-art of conventional bulk and multiple quantum wells devices. The device performances of the current generation of InP-based quantum dots lasers are mostly limited by the inhomogeneous broadening, the polarization sensitivity and the low optical confinement of QDs, which result from their strain-driven nucleation process. We do believe that a disruptive approach based on the combination of strain-engineering, electronic coupling and design optimization of the nanostructures would allow for overcoming all these actual limitations.
