Role Description: This project focuses on understanding mechanisms underlying immune sampling of pre- and probiotics in relation to age and gender. The PhD-fellow will focus on age-related part of the project. The effects of age on the composition of systemic and intestinal immune cell populations/ immune sampling, and the effect of pre- and probiotics on different immune cell populations/ immune sampling in relation to age will be studied in in vivo mouse models. The PhD-fellow will study the immunomodulatory capacity of two lactobacilli strains, two bifidobacteria strains, one fermentable oligosaccharide and one non-fermentable fibre in mice of different ages. Several immunological techniques will be employed to isolate immune cells and to study innate and adaptive immunological changes in blood and several tissues in response to the described pre- and probiotics. Further, the PhD-fellow will be involved in determining miRNA profiles in different immune cell subsets in relation to age and in response to the described pre- and probiotics. The PhD-fellow will work in close collaboration with the PhD-fellow working on Changes in immune sampling during aging; gender, and Changes in immune sampling during aging; microbiological ecology to gain insight in the changes in
systemical and intestinal immune cell populations/ immune sampling and the changes in microbiological ecology in the vicinity of immune sampling sites. Further, the PhD-fellow will work in collaboration with the post-doc working on Identification of immune sampling sites in mice and the PhD-fellow working on Integrity and function of the mucus layer in immune sampling to gain further insight in age-related differences in function and structure of immune sampling sites identified in WP A and to determine changes in mucus characteristics during the aging process. Main Tasks and responsibilities staying abreast of developments in his scientific discipline by keeping up with the scientific literature in his field and visiting scientific meetings generating ideas within the scope of the defined subject supervising of research assistants and students, where appropriate delivering results in line with the project plan milestones and deliverables keeping up with the latest scientific developments and integrating these in the project converting data and results of the sub-project into overview reports keeping traceable records of all results and analyses according to the lab journal procedure writing high-quality clearly written papers about the results obtained and getting these published in high–impact scientific journals. completing a thesis after 4 yearsDescription
