Role Description: This project focuses on the thickness, function, and permeability of the small and large intestinal mucus layer and its impact on the specific permeation of immunogenic organisms and compounds. The PhD-fellow will focus on identifying the structure and function of the intestinal mucus layer and its relevance to immune sampling. Further, the PhD-fellow will focus on the development of methods that may quantify the effect of pro- and prebiotics on the thickness and structure of the mucus-layer. Further, the PhD-fellow will be involved in appointing candidate organisms (in case of probiotic) or fibres (in case of prebiotics) which are able to modify the mucus layer and change immune sampling. Mucus characteristics will be studied in vivo in humans and mice, based on previously developed techniques. Further, human and mouse tissue samples will be used to study mucus characteristics in the direct vicinity of immune sampling sites. The technology used to study mucus characteristics will also be used to study the relation between mucus composition and its effects on immune sampling. The PhD-fellow will work in collaboration with post-docs and PhD-fellows from the subprojects
Identification of immune sampling sites in mice (WP A) and Food induced modulation of the human intestinal immune barrier (WP C), and if applicable Influence of age on immune sampling and function (WP B) to study mucus characteristics in relation to pro- and prebiotic induced changes in immune sampling. Main Tasks and responsibilities The PhD student is responsible for: contributing to the full project plan staying abreast of developments in his scientific discipline by keeping up with the scientific literature in his field and visiting scientific meetings generating ideas within the scope of the defined subject supervising of research assistants and students, where appropriate delivering results in line with the project plan milestones and deliverables keeping up with the latest scientific developments and integrating these in the project converting data and results of the sub-project into overview reports keeping traceable records of all results and analyses according to the lab journal procedure writing high-quality clearly written papers about the results obtained and getting these published in high–impact scientific journals. completing a thesis after 4 years.Description
