PhD student in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography at Stockholm University

We seek a PhD student to study the interaction of atmospheric black carbon aerosols with clouds and precipitation. The work will involve analysis of in-situ data from several field studies to examine how black carbon aerosols are scavenged and processed by clouds. The observational data will be used to evaluate and develop model parameterizations of black carbon aerosol-cloud interaction.
The position is funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas within the framework of the Modeling Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions and Impacts (MACCII) project. The overall aim of MACCII is to bridge the gap between new understanding of climate-relevant processes and new and improved parameterizations of these processes in global climate models. MACCII specifically concentrates on aerosols, clouds and their interactions.
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics or Earth sciences. Programming experience in Fortran will be considered an advantage.

Eligibility
Admission requirements for PhD studies at the Department of Meteorology, Stockholm University: Applicants must have completed a basic degree or the equivalent of university study of 240 ECTS points (corresponding to 4 years study). Special requirements are a minimum of 90 ECTS in either meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry, a minimum of 15 ECTS in mathematics and an independent project work corresponding to at least 15 ECTS. A minimum of 60 ECTS must be at an advanced level. The requirements can also be met by having acquired the corresponding experience in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
Selection criteria
The selection is based on the applicant’s ability to successfully pursue a research education. At the selection, special emphasis is put on knowledge and skill within the subject area, ability to express in speech and written text, analytical ability, creativity, initiative and independence, and an ability to collaborate. This will be judged based on the relevance of earlier studies, grades on previous university courses (in particular at advanced level), quality and extent on the independent project work, available references (including fax number and/or email addresses), a personal declaration, and interviews.
Conditions of employment
The position is full time for a maximum of four study years. Some department tasks, such as teaching or assistantship, may apply and in this case the total time for employment will be extended with the corresponding time.
