Research Scholarships Funded by The University of Sussex for Applicants from China, India and the USA

Scholarships

The Scholarships are available for DPhil (PhD) research

Scholarships provide funding for three years only and must commence in 2011/12.

Scholarships are equivalent to £24,000 over three years.

Scholarships are paid in the form of an £8,000 tuition fee waiver in each of three years.

Eligibility

You must be a national of China, India or the USA.

You must have been normally resident for the last three years in China, India or the USA.

You must have been assessed as liable to pay the overseas (non-UK/EU) rate of fee.

You will have the equivalent of a UK undergraduate degree with either first class or very good upper second class honours. If you are applying for research in the arts or social sciences you will normally need to have the equivalent of a UK masters degree.

You must be intending to study the majority of your degree at Sussex, apart from occasional overseas fieldwork.

You must submit a separate application for admission for postgraduate research to Sussex as a new full-time research student for admission in 2011/12 by Friday 29 April 2011.

Current Sussex research degree students are not eligible to apply.

If you are a New-Route DPhil applicant you are not eligible to apply.

You cannot hold the Scholarship concurrently with any other Sussex scholarship (you can still hold the Alumni Study Award if you are a former Sussex student).

You cannot defer the Scholarship if you are unable to take up the original place in 2011/12.

Continuation of the Scholarship for years two and three is subject to satisfactory progress in the research degree.

Selection criteria

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and research potential.

Schedule

Friday April 29 - deadline for applications for scholarship
Friday April 29 - deadline for separate applications for research place
End of May – selection panel meets to award scholarships
June 1 – applicants informed of outcome via email.
